FAQ
Does the countdown include today?
The countdown shows the number of complete days between today and your target date. If the target is tomorrow, it shows 1. If it's today, it shows 0 with the message "It's today!"
Can I count down to a past date?
Yes! If you enter a date in the past, the calculator will show a negative number and indicate how many days ago that date was. This is useful for tracking anniversaries or seeing how long ago an event occurred.
What are weekdays used for?
Weekdays (Monday-Friday) help you understand how many work or school days remain until your target date. This is especially useful for project deadlines, work milestones, or planning around business schedules.
Does this account for leap years?
Yes, the calculator automatically handles leap years correctly. If your countdown spans February 29 in a leap year, the extra day is included in the calculation.
Why does it show approximate months?
Months vary in length (28-31 days), so we use an average of 30.44 days per month. This gives a reasonable approximation but may differ by a day or two from calendar months. For exact month calculations, use our Date Difference Calculator.
Methodology
The calculator uses straightforward date arithmetic:
Days Calculation:
- Get today's date at midnight
- Get target date at midnight
- Calculate difference in milliseconds
- Convert to days: difference / (1000 * 60 * 60 * 24)
Weeks and Days:
- Weeks = Total days / 7 (rounded down)
- Remaining days = Total days % 7
Weekdays Calculation:
- Iterate through each day from today to target
- Count Monday-Friday occurrences
- Weekend days = Total days - Weekdays
