How many pavers do you actually need?
The math behind a paver estimate is simple in principle: divide the area you want to cover by the area of a single paver. A 10×20 ft patio is 200 sq ft. A 4×8 in paver covers 32 sq in, or about 0.222 sq ft, so bare coverage needs roughly 900 pavers. The catch is that no real patio uses exactly the bare number. Edges get cut, a few pavers crack during handling, and diagonal or herringbone patterns waste more at the borders. That is why a waste factor is added on top — usually 10% — bringing our example to 990 pavers. Because you buy pavers as whole units, the result is always rounded up. The paver formula
Pavers = ⌈ (Patio area ÷ Paver area) × (1 + Waste %) ⌉
Where:
- Patio area = length × width
- Paver area = paver width × paver length (a 4×8 in paver = 32 sq in = 0.2222 sq ft)
- Waste % covers cuts, breakage, and pattern loss (10% typical)
- ⌈ ⌉ means round up to a whole paver
Example: a 200 sq ft patio ÷ 0.2222 sq ft per paver = 900 pavers, × 1.10 for waste = 990 pavers.

Examples
Example 1 — small 4×8 walkway. A 3 ft × 25 ft walkway is 75 sq ft. Using 4×8 in pavers (0.2222 sq ft each): 75 ÷ 0.2222 = 338 pavers, ×1.10 = 372 pavers.
Example 2 — patio with big pavers. A 12 ft × 16 ft patio is 192 sq ft. Using 12×12 in pavers (1 sq ft each): 192 ÷ 1 = 192, ×1.10 = 212 pavers.
Example 3 — herringbone driveway apron. A 10 ft × 18 ft area is 180 sq ft with 6×9 in pavers (0.375 sq ft each): 180 ÷ 0.375 = 480, and a herringbone pattern needs 15% waste → ×1.15 = 552 pavers.
Tips for a better estimate
- Round up, always. Buy the whole number the calculator gives and keep a handful of spares for future repairs — dye lots change between batches.
- Match waste to your pattern. Straight running bond wastes ~5–10%; 45° diagonal, herringbone, or curved edges waste 15–20%.
- Order base materials separately. A paver patio also needs about 4–6 in of crushed stone and 1 in of bedding sand under it — estimate those with our related material calculators.
- Measure irregular shapes in rectangles. Split an L-shaped patio into two rectangles, calculate each, and add the results.
- Confirm the true paver size. Nominal '6×6' pavers are often 5⅞ in with joints — for tight budgets, measure one and use Custom size.
