How to Use This Calculator
Step 1: Enter the bill amount before tip. This is the subtotal on your receipt, not including tax (or including tax — your choice, but be consistent).
Step 2: Enter the tip percentage. Common tip amounts are 15% (adequate), 18% (good), 20% (great), and 25% (exceptional). Enter just the number — for a 20% tip, enter 20.
Step 3: If splitting the bill, enter the number of people. If paying alone, leave it at 1 or blank.
Step 4: Click Calculate. The result shows the total bill with tip. The breakdown shows the tip amount, the original bill, and the per-person amount if splitting.
Understanding Tipping in the United States
Tipping is a standard practice in the US service industry. Unlike many countries where service charges are included in prices, American restaurants, bars, salons, and delivery services rely on tips as a significant portion of workers' income.
Standard tipping ranges in US restaurants: 15% for adequate service, 18% for good service, 20% for great service, and 22-25% for exceptional service. These percentages are generally applied to the pre-tax subtotal, though tipping on the post-tax amount is also common and considered generous.
Who you tip and how much:
- Restaurants (sit-down): 15-25% of the bill
- Delivery drivers: 15-20% or $3-5 minimum
- Bartenders: $1-2 per drink or 15-20% of the tab
- Hair stylists: 15-20% of the service cost
- Taxi/rideshare: 15-20% of the fare
- Hotel housekeeping: $2-5 per night
Splitting the bill is common when dining in groups. The total (bill + tip) is divided equally among all diners. Some groups split only the food cost and tip individually. This calculator divides the total evenly.
Tax and tip: Purists tip on the pre-tax subtotal; many people tip on the total including tax for simplicity. The difference is usually small — on a $50 bill with 8% tax, the difference between tipping 20% pre-tax ($10) and post-tax ($10.80) is only $0.80.
Tip Calculation Formula
Tip Amount = Bill × (Tip Percentage / 100)
Total = Bill + Tip
Per Person = Total / Number of People
Example: Bill is $85, tip is 20%, splitting between 3 people.
- Tip = $85 × 0.20 = $17.00
- Total = $85 + $17 = $102.00
- Per person = $102 / 3 = $34.00
Quick mental math shortcuts:
- 10% tip: Move the decimal point left one place. 10% of $85 = $8.50
- 15% tip: Find 10%, then add half of it. $8.50 + $4.25 = $12.75
- 20% tip: Find 10% and double it. $8.50 × 2 = $17.00
- 25% tip: Find 10%, multiply by 2.5. Or find 25% as one-quarter of the bill: $85 ÷ 4 = $21.25
Tip Amounts for Common Bill Sizes
| Bill | 15% Tip | 18% Tip | 20% Tip | 25% Tip |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $20 | $3.00 | $3.60 | $4.00 | $5.00 |
| $30 | $4.50 | $5.40 | $6.00 | $7.50 |
| $50 | $7.50 | $9.00 | $10.00 | $12.50 |
| $75 | $11.25 | $13.50 | $15.00 | $18.75 |
| $100 | $15.00 | $18.00 | $20.00 | $25.00 |
| $150 | $22.50 | $27.00 | $30.00 | $37.50 |
| $200 | $30.00 | $36.00 | $40.00 | $50.00 |
| $300 | $45.00 | $54.00 | $60.00 | $75.00 |
| $500 | $75.00 | $90.00 | $100.00 | $125.00 |
Examples
Example 1: Standard Dinner Tip
Your dinner bill is $62. You want to leave a 20% tip. Enter bill = 62, tip = 20. Result: tip is $12.40, total is $74.40.
Example 2: Group Dinner Split
A group of 4 friends has a $180 bill and wants to tip 18%. Enter bill = 180, tip = 18, split = 4. Total with tip: $212.40. Each person pays $53.10.
Example 3: Generous Tip for Great Service
Your brunch bill is $45 and the server was exceptional. You want to tip 25%. Enter bill = 45, tip = 25. Tip: $11.25, total: $56.25. The server receives $11.25 for their great service.
Tips for Tipping
Use 20% as your baseline. Service workers often rely on tips for the majority of their income. 20% is the current standard for good service in the US.
Tip on the pre-tax amount. The subtotal before tax is the standard base for calculating tips. Look for the subtotal line on your receipt, not the total with tax.
Round up for simplicity. If the calculated tip is $11.40, consider rounding to $12 or even $15. Round numbers are easier to write and slightly more generous.
Do not skip the tip to punish bad service. If service is poor, 10-15% is more appropriate than zero. No tip punishes the server's livelihood, not the restaurant. Speak to a manager if there is a genuine service problem.
For delivery, consider a minimum tip. Even on small orders, a $3-5 minimum tip is appropriate because drivers spend the same time and fuel regardless of order size.
