Character Counter

How to Use This Calculator

Step 1: Type or paste text. Character count updates in real time.

Step 2: See characters with/without spaces, words, sentences, paragraphs, reading time.

Step 3: Use for platform limits — Twitter 280, meta descriptions 160, SMS 160.

Why Character Count Matters

Character count is the hard limit on many platforms. Twitter 280, Instagram bio 150, YouTube titles 100, meta descriptions 155-160, title tags 60.

With vs without spaces matters for different uses. Social media counts all characters. Some academic systems count without spaces. Every space, comma, and emoji counts.

Counting Methods

With spaces: Every character — letters, numbers, punctuation, spaces, tabs, newlines.

Without spaces: Same but excludes whitespace.

Example: "Hello, World!" = 13 with spaces, 12 without.

Examples

Example 1: Meta description at 103 chars — room under 160 limit.

Example 2: Tweet at 310 chars — 30 over, trim 5-6 words.

Example 3: SMS at 172 chars — will split. Cut 12 characters.

Character Limit Tips

Count before you post. Platforms reject or truncate at the limit.

URLs count as characters. Long URLs eat 50+ characters.

Emojis may count as 2+. Test near limits.

Meta descriptions: 150-155 for safety.

Frequently Asked Questions

What counts as a character?
Every letter, number, space, punctuation mark, and special character counts as one character. Emojis are trickier — most basic emojis count as 2 characters due to Unicode encoding, and some complex emojis (like flags or skin-tone variants) can count as 4-7 characters. Line breaks (pressing Enter) also count as one character on Mac/Linux and two on Windows.
What is the difference between character count and byte count?
Standard English letters and numbers (ASCII characters) use 1 byte each, so character count equals byte count for plain English text. However, accented characters (like e with accent), special symbols, and emojis use 2-4 bytes in UTF-8 encoding. A 100-character tweet with emojis might use 150+ bytes. Most platforms limit by characters, not bytes.
Do line breaks count as characters?
Yes. Each time you press Enter, it adds one character (on Mac and Linux) or two characters (on Windows, which uses both a carriage return and a line feed). This is important when you are close to a character limit — three line breaks on Windows use 6 characters. Most social media platforms count line breaks as one character regardless of operating system.
Why does Twitter show a different character count than this tool?
Twitter uses its own counting rules that differ from standard character counting. URLs are always counted as 23 characters regardless of actual length. Chinese, Japanese, and Korean characters count as 2 characters each. Some emojis count as 2 characters. These Twitter-specific rules mean your tweet might show a different remaining character count than a standard counter.
How do I count characters in Microsoft Word?
In Microsoft Word, go to the Review tab and click Word Count. A dialog box shows characters with spaces and characters without spaces, along with word count, paragraph count, and line count. You can also click the word count in the bottom status bar for a quick view. On Mac, it is under Tools > Word Count.
Can I count characters in a PDF?
Select the text in the PDF, copy it (Ctrl+C or Cmd+C), and paste it here. Only text that you can select and highlight will be counted — images, scanned pages, and non-selectable elements are not included. If the PDF is a scanned document (image-based), you will need OCR software like Adobe Acrobat to extract the text first.
