Salary to Hourly Calculator

How to Use This Calculator

Enter your annual salary, then set how many hours you work per week and how many weeks you work per year. The calculator divides your yearly pay by your total working hours to show your true hourly rate. Most US salaried workers use 40 hours a week and 52 weeks a year (2,080 hours), but you can lower the weeks to account for unpaid time off. Need to convert a monthly or weekly figure instead? Open More options and switch the pay period so the tool knows what the amount represents.

What your salary is really worth per hour

A yearly salary hides your real hourly rate because it bundles every hour you work into one number. To find out how much you make per hour, you divide your annual pay by the total hours you actually work in a year. Someone on $52,000 who works a standard 40-hour week for 52 weeks earns exactly $25.00 an hour. But if that same person routinely works 50 hours a week, their real rate drops to $20.00 an hour — the salary didn't change, but the hours did. That's why comparing a salaried job offer to an hourly one only makes sense once both are on the same per-hour footing. This is also the fastest way to answer questions like *what is a $60,000 salary per hour* or *how much is $70k a year hourly* — set the hours and weeks, and read the rate.

The salary-to-hourly formula

Hourly rate = Annual salary ÷ (Hours per week × Weeks per year)

The denominator is your total working hours for the year. A full-time US schedule is 40 × 52 = 2,080 hours. If you take two unpaid weeks off, use 50 weeks (2,000 hours) instead, which nudges your effective hourly rate up. To go the other way — hourly to salary — multiply your hourly rate by your yearly hours.

Annual salary to hourly rate (40 hrs/week, 52 weeks)

Annual salaryHourly rateWeekly pay
$30,000$14.42$576.92
$40,000$19.23$769.23
$50,000$24.04$961.54
$60,000$28.85$1,153.85
$75,000$36.06$1,442.31
$100,000$48.08$1,923.08

Examples

$52,000 a year, 40 hrs/week, 52 weeks → 52,000 ÷ 2,080 = $25.00/hour.

$75,000 a year, 45 hrs/week, 52 weeks → 75,000 ÷ 2,340 = $32.05/hour — the extra 5 hours a week quietly cut the rate.

$60,000 a year, 40 hrs/week, 50 weeks (two unpaid weeks off) → 60,000 ÷ 2,000 = $30.00/hour.

Tips for an accurate hourly rate

- Count the hours you truly work, not the hours on paper. Unpaid overtime lowers your real rate more than most people expect.
- Drop the weeks, not the salary, for unpaid leave. If you take three unpaid weeks, use 49 weeks so the math reflects your actual working year.
- Salary is pre-tax. This tool shows gross hourly pay; your take-home per hour will be lower after taxes and deductions.
- Comparing two jobs? Put both on an hourly basis first — a higher salary with far longer hours can lose to a lower one.
- Freelancers: back out billable hours only, since unbillable admin time isn't paid.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert my salary to an hourly rate?
Divide your annual salary by the total hours you work in a year. For a standard 40-hour week over 52 weeks that's 2,080 hours, so a $52,000 salary works out to $25.00 an hour. Change the hours per week or weeks per year to match your real schedule.
What is a $60,000 salary per hour?
At 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, $60,000 a year is about $28.85 an hour (60,000 ÷ 2,080). If you take two unpaid weeks off and use 50 weeks, it rises to $30.00 an hour.
How many work hours are in a year?
A full-time US schedule of 40 hours a week for all 52 weeks is 2,080 hours a year. Subtracting two weeks of unpaid time off leaves 2,000 hours, and one week off leaves 2,040 hours.
Does this hourly rate include taxes?
No. The calculator shows your gross (pre-tax) hourly rate based on your salary. Your actual take-home pay per hour will be lower after income tax, Social Security, Medicare, and any benefit deductions.
How do I turn an hourly wage back into a yearly salary?
Multiply your hourly rate by your hours per week, then by your weeks per year. For example, $25/hour × 40 hours × 52 weeks = $52,000 a year.
