Cooking measurements in the US use a mix of customary units (cups, tablespoons, teaspoons, fluid ounces) and metric units (milliliters, liters). Most American recipes use customary units, while international recipes and professional kitchens use metric.

Why accuracy matters: Baking is chemistry — too much flour or too little liquid can ruin a recipe. While savory cooking is forgiving, baking requires precise measurements. A tablespoon of baking powder versus a teaspoon is the difference between a fluffy cake and a bitter mess.

US vs metric: The US customary cup (236.59 mL) is slightly different from the metric cup used in Australia (250 mL) and other countries. This converter uses US customary measurements. When following international recipes, check which cup standard they use.

Liquid vs dry measurements: Fluid ounces (volume) and ounces (weight) are different. 1 fluid ounce of water weighs approximately 1 ounce, but 1 fluid ounce of honey weighs about 1.5 ounces. This converter handles liquid volume measurements only.

All conversions go through a common base unit: milliliters (mL).

Example 1: Cups to Milliliters
A recipe calls for 1.5 cups of milk. Enter 1.5, from cups, to ml. Result: 354.88 mL. Useful when using a metric measuring cup.

Example 2: Tablespoons to Teaspoons
Need 2 tablespoons of vanilla but only have a teaspoon. Enter 2, from tbsp, to tsp. Result: 6 teaspoons.

Example 3: Fluid Ounces to Cups
A sauce recipe calls for 12 fl oz of broth. Enter 12, from fl oz, to cups. Result: 1.5 cups.

For baking, use weight measurements when possible. A kitchen scale measuring in grams is more accurate than volume cups for flour, sugar, and butter. Flour can vary 20% in weight per cup depending on how it is scooped.

Level dry measurements. When measuring flour or sugar with a cup, level the top with a straight edge. Heaping cups can add 20-30% more ingredient.

Use liquid measuring cups for liquids. They have a pour spout and are designed to be read at eye level. Dry measuring cups are meant to be filled and leveled.

Memorize key equivalents. 1 cup = 16 tablespoons = 48 teaspoons = 8 fl oz. 1 tablespoon = 3 teaspoons. These are the most common conversions.
